“...And he, trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt Thou have me do? And The Lord said unto him, Arise and go into the city and it shall be told thee what thou must do.”    Acts 9:6

Somehow, as humans, we find it difficult to remain on course. There is always something to distract us from our goal; people, places, things, work, —even family.  There are times when God governs our distractions so that we may fulfill His Will; and, there are times when He does not.  Our goal, as the distractions occur, is to use our inspired sense of discernment to determine the difference.

If God initiates our distraction, there are no deceptions, hidden agendas, or shady dealings; and somehow, miraculously, there is no lost time. —We remain right on schedule!  Almost everyone can attest to this; since, it has happened to most of us, at one time or another.  Just think about it for a few minutes; you'll remember.
You may remember a time when you thought you were lost, but found exactly what you were looking for.  Or, when you were in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and met the person who would become your closest friend, or lifelong partner.

When our distractions are not initiated by God, they are usually created by us, due to our own disobedience, or innate fears. These distractions can be destructive; and, they can make accessing the detour routes back to God a difficult process.  However, do not be dismayed, there is always a road back to God!

To get back on track, each person will have to travel their respective routes separately to understand how to access the detours delivered by God.  The process is highly personal; and, like most detour routes, they are long, winding, unavoidable, and not to our liking.  Like Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus, found in Acts 9:3-21, the process selected by God to get us back on track can be quite a shock to our system!  However, just like Paul’s conversion, God will also send someone to help us to clearly see the new route.  L.

In Spirit and In Truth

Picture
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.”   John 4:23-24

Jesus Himself uttered today’s verse to the woman He met at the well in Samaria after she explained “where” she worshiped  God. Yet instead, in His response He explains, what “type” of worship God truly requires of us.

Some of us go to church out of rote; we simply have kept the tradition of going week after week, because it was fostered by our parents and grandparents. So, we walk in broken and unfulfilled, and we walk out cloaked the very same way. We utter pleasantries, hear the Word, then leave; and, although God may speak directly into our lives while there, we enact no change. So, what’s the point?   If you are coming out the same way that you went in, with no change to your spirit or your truth, what is really the point?

In the case of the Samaritan woman at the well, God spoke directly into her life. The truth of her life was that she felt spiritually unfulfilled, ostracized, and completely unworthy. This was her truth. God already knew it; and, this truth is what He needed for her to bring to the altar. And yet, she came day after day to the wellspring thirsty and unfulfilled; worse yet, leaving God in the very same state, thirsty and unfulfilled in reference to her life.

The idea of worship in Spirit and in Truth is exactly what it says.  It is the relinquishing of your Spirit to God, where you bring the issues of your existence to the altar for purging.  It means bringing the truth about your feelings, fears, hopes, dreams, desires, and aches to the altar. It means that, if you walked in with a pending issue, that issue is left at the altar when you leave. We are in the midst of a new year; do you still want to do the same old thing?  Do you leave Jesus at the well, thirsty for the utterance of your truth, unfulfilled with the relinquishing of your spirit?  Or, are you really ready to make the necessary changes to be fully quenched in Spirit and in Truth?  Like all things pertaining to God, it comes down to one decision. Do you allow Him to lead your life or not?   The decision is yours alone. There really is no middle ground –it is either yes, or no.  L.

Sacrificial Deeds

Picture
"Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.”    1 Corinthians 7:23-24

Imagine being at the tribunal that would eventually lead to the fulfillment of Jesus' death at Calvary.  Although Jesus responded only a few times, He truly had the opportunity and strength to defend Himself against the accounts of the Sanhedrin. Instead, He accepted their accusations without a fight, understanding that His sacrifice would ultimately save the human race.

Eventually, as a Christian, you will have to make a sacrifice that will benefit others without an apparent benefit to yourself; you may have even done so already. However, there’s one small caveat. Unlike Jesus, your sacrifice may lead you to some type of resentment against your fellow Christians, or even, the church itself. You may even believe you did not receive your price for the sacrifice, i.e. recognition, position, accolades, fanfare, love, etc.

It is so easy for the human ego to get caught up in the pomp and circumstance of Christian churches, where we eagerly desire to become part of the hierarchy.  Resist the urge.  Somehow, desperately keep in mind that any sacrifice you make is not for you; and, it’s not really for others; it is for God. We can never repay the sacrifice of Jesus. Our worship is not enough, our praise is not enough, and what we believe to be our sacrifice is not enough. Our life and love is the only thing we can offer; it is the only thing that counts.

To really understand our sacrifice fully, think about this; has a child you loved ever given you a homemade gift?  Do you remember your reaction? Did you display it with pride and satisfaction?  Now, could that gift really equal any of the gifts you have given to that child?  -No.   Your love sees the sacrifice, time, and love that the child has put into the gift.  Our gifts, sacrifices, worship, and praise is like that to God. Know that God loves you already, and anything you bring to Him is accepted with Love. So beloved, do not wait for your sacrifice to garner recognition, position, accolades, fanfare, love, etc. from others; know that you already have it from God. -L.

Your Thoughts: Praise!

“I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised.“
Psalm 18:3 a

When is God worthy to be praised?

There are some people who will only praise God when they are in church. And, there are others who will only sing the songs found in their hymnal. However, praise is personal; often, our songs are our heartfelt prayers set to music.  Whether we are happy or sad, or full of joy or sorrow, the songs we sing are our way of calling out for God’s mercy and goodness.  It is our soul’s poetry to Him and it can be completely random and made up as we go. So remember, when you call on God you do not have to be eloquent, on key, in unison, or even audible; your song simply has to be a song that encompasses your heartfelt love and honest praise.
So today, lift your voice, sing your song, and Praise His Name!  L.

Your Thoughts: Set Apart (I)

“But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for Himself; the Lord will hear when I call unto Him.”
Psalm 4:3

Most people believe that they “find” God on their own, not realizing that God has always been there patiently waiting for them to seek Him. Yet, for most Believers, there will be times when God will prod you to speak to someone about Jesus in order to help them understand more about His Love.

Today’s verse reminds us that God sets apart those that are godly for Himself; but, quite often, He also sets apart those that are wallowing in the midst of sin; since, unlike us, He knows their heart and their future.

Think about it. He set aside Zacchaeus, a hated and thieving tax collector who hid in a tree, hoping that he could look at God without being seen. He set aside each of His disciples, including Judas, while they were in the midst of doing their regular daily routine. He set aside Paul, stopping him cold; a man who, in his zeal to uphold the religious traditions of the past, was on his way to murder Christians.  —He even set aside you and me.  So remember, no one is lost until their very last breath; and even then, there's Grace.  Every single person can be touched by God, even while they are in the midst of doing something that you consider ungodly.

It doesn’t matter if someone is hiding, working, or zealous about doing something insane, they can still be touched by the Spirit of God. —Just a little something for you to remember the next time you are making a decision on “who” you should speak to about the Love of God. L.

The Control Factor

3/26/2020

Picture

"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

Genesis 1:28

Are you a control freak?  Do you struggle with the need to control others?  There are two extremes —the need to control and the laissez-faire attitude where anything goes.  Most of us fall somewhere in the middle.  There are elements of control that enable our society to function orderly, and there are times when a little chaos within order promotes fun and creativity.  The brilliant among us find ways to combine both extremes to produce the best results.

Many years ago, I worked with a man who fit the control freak title to a tee.  The issue with control freaks is that, in their effort to control every aspect of their life, they believe they can control the overlapping aspects of the lives of others.  It’s easy to see how this can lead to a totally frustrated life. A control freak is really hiding his/her inadequacies, especially the inability to adapt to change. And, if there is one thing we know for sure, it’s this; change is a vital part of living, and, everything must change!  Unfortunately, an inability to change brings obsolescence; and with it, antiquated ideas concerning the reality of the world-at-large.

Here's the thing to remember when you decide you will be the ultimate control-freak. God created the world, yet He did not control Adam or Eve.  He allowed them to determine their destiny, and ultimately ours.  Jesus, who loves us dearly, could have manipulated the events leading to Calvary and His crucifixion; yet, He did not. So, here is my question. Why would you believe you can control elements outside of yourself?  Why would you believe being the ultimate control-freak will work for you?

The fine art of being Christian is the ability to relinquish all cares, problems, and even people to God.  In our growth we gain the understanding that we can only control ourselves, and even this, takes work. God gave us dominion; however, He gave us dominion as stewards, not as despots who would not acknowledge His sovereignty.  So, today, leave room for the Spirit of God to come in.  –Pray it up, let it go, and let God handle it!   L.

Your Thoughts: Peace At Bedtime

3/25/2020

Picture
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep, for Thou Lord, only maketh me dwell in safety.”     Psalm 4:8

Let’s be honest. –Not everyone goes to sleep in peace and safety, even within the body of Christ. There are some people among us that are caught in the ravages of all types of personal wars and prisons, both literal and psychological. We can be afraid of life, our mates or spouses, current circumstances, decisions we have made, or decisions to be made. We can even fear God at various times in our life.

Depending on how you were raised, praying at bedtime offered solace. Ordinarily, most Christians would never send their children to sleep without asking them to pray aloud for their own safety through the night. Yet, bedtime prayer is not only for children; it is also for adults.  And, although it may not be considered sexy to pray at bedtime, it allows you to relinquish your cares, problems, and even people, to the only One who can give us peace. In fact, married couples should consider praying together at bedtime. It will aid the dismissal of any disputes or hurtful words uttered during the day, while putting into practice the biblical verse found in Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32:

"Be ye angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath; neither give place to the devil. Let all bitterness, wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice; and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you."

Pray every morning upon rising, for the day ahead, and every night before bedtime, to release the day; it puts to rest all the issues of your life, giving you peace.  –And, it will cover every member of your household, even you.  L.

The Power to Blink

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”     Matthew 10:16

Blink, The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell is a fascinating book; and, Mr. Gladwell is easily becoming one of my favorite authors. In Blink, he outlines the many ways we subconsciously absorb information without really thinking about it; and, further delves into how our subconscious perceptions undermine our conscious perceptions without us really "knowing" it, shaping our personalities, actions, habits, likes, dislikes, etc.

As I read the book, the thought occurred to me how important it was to streamline the things (i.e. movies, news, books, music, and other forms of entertainment) we constantly ingest so we are not inclined to do things that go against our moral resolve. According to the book, a grouping of words or images with key connections, can penetrate our subconscious and manipulate us into doing something, without complete awareness of why we are doing it.  From a marketing perspective, I know this is true; we call it advertising, or more precise, subliminal advertising.
I interrupt young people all the time, especially young men, if I hear them rapping the illicit lyrics of a song, certain that they are consciously unaware of the words they are reiterating. In many instances they tell me that they simply love the "beat" of the song, not really paying attention to the lyrics. However, I often explain to them that, what they do not know is that the lyrics sit in their subconscious mind manipulating them to act in ways that may go against their conscious behavior.

As Christians we are not immune to subliminal advertising, we respond exactly the same way as non-Christians. The difference is, we consciously read, listen, and strengthen our moral character by embracing biblical principles. However, we are part of society, and everything is secular—everything is cultural. I am not saying that in order to love God, we should sit idling in a monastery or convent; no, our eyes should be wide open. I believe you should be aware of the traits of society and culture, so that it does not become a lure or trap for you. Becoming an ostrich with your head buried in the sand does not make you immune—it makes you prey.  Jesus deeply understood this when He said, “…be as wise as a serpent, and as harmless as a dove.”  L.

Faithful In A Crisis

“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for He is faithful that promised. And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.”    Hebrews 10:23-24

It is a little eerie when a scripture stays in your head and continues to appear unexpectedly. Some time ago, in church, we had an enormous breakthrough during a spirit-filled “High” Holy Day. It began with an Elder’s reading of Habakkuk 3:17-19, and was paired with her ardent prayers and supplication to God based on those three verses. It culminated with a brilliant sermon, filled with the Hope of God and God’s Love for humanity. This scripture has stayed with me since, and has prompted me to look at the cycle of our relationship with God.

At the beginning of our romance with God, we begin the dating process superficially —He looks good; and, it feels good to be with Him. Many times whatever we want—we get; but for the most part, without really getting into the depth of faith necessary to sustain a great long-lasting relationship. However, as we continue to date God, there are times when our desires will not be advantageous to Him, and how we react to not receiving our desire will make all the difference whether or not we develop the depth of faith necessary to remain faithful in a crisis. (Isn't it the same in a human relationship? Don’t we really want someone who is there for us in a crisis —someone who doesn't run or waver at the first sign of trouble?)

Habakkuk 3:17-19, is one of those passages invoking Christians to offer praise and thanksgiving unto God, even though we are unable to see the visual manifestations of His Love in our lives. It is quite powerful because, it offers the opportunity and insight to accept our circumstances with the understanding that God still cares no matter how great our obstacles, trials, or tribulations may appear. You can imagine it as the book of Job in three verses. “Yea, though Thou slay me, I will still believe.”  It is a powerful reminder of God’s Love affair with mankind, and an affirmation of our love to Him.  God’s Faithfulness is unquestionable; we know that God will come through for us in a crisis! Our faith however, can waver like the wind.

Take the time to remind yourself of God’s blessings in your life, and give thanks whether you can see the visual manifestations of His love or not. It will not only strengthen your relationship, but it will increase your depth of faith so, when necessary, like all real relationships, you can come through for Him in a crisis.  L.

Will You Be Ready?

"And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.  And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”        1 Samuel 17:32-33

The story of David’s conquest of Goliath is probably one of the most famous stories in the Bible.  It would be easy to examine David’s conquering of Goliath as a metaphor for whatever battles you might be facing, however, let’s look at something else.

Although as children we believed David was about 12 or 13 years old when he met Goliath, it is much more probable that he was in his late teens to mid-twenties. As the youngest of eight boys, we can imagine he was a little rambunctious, with that wonderful agility young men get from working outdoors—strong, sinewy, and muscular. His responsibility of caring for his father’s sheep was probably a great way to keep him out of trouble while learning the responsibilities of a shepherd, a task not taken very lightly in tribal Israel. When Jesse, David’s father, asked him to take provisions to his older brothers who had been perched atop a mountain for forty days prepped for war against the Philistines; chances are, he had no idea David was planning to stay! After all, he was not even dressed for battle!

Let’s recap the story for those who don’t remember the details.  After hearing David’s bravado while speaking with his brothers and the other soldiers, Saul’s soldiers, recounting David’s bravery, take David to the King. By this time, King Saul had already lost God’s favor due to disobedience; and, unbeknownst to Saul, Samuel the Prophet had already anointed David to be the next King of Israel.  While speaking to King Saul, David repeats the same level of bravado he used while speaking to the soldiers.  Out of options, and as fearful as the rest of his army, King Saul, a massive man, offers David his own over-sized attire to fight Goliath.  David sheds Saul’s attire, and straps on his own unique armament, a slingshot and 5 smooth stones, as his weapons of choice.

Think about this. Did Saul really expect for David to return undefeated? No. He actually sent him out there to die. Saul was simply trying to buy time, or even worse—surrender!  He had no idea that God’s favor was with David.
We can imagine David tending sheep, wondering when he was going to get the chance to join his brothers on the field of battle, daydreaming of a time when he could show the Philistines, and all the enemies of God, God’s strength.

There are going to be times in your life when you too will be thrust into battle, simply to buy time for someone else who, running out of options, has no idea what else to do!  You will be called to step into the gap; and, they will try to give you their armaments to fight, but theirs will not be a custom fit for you.  At that time, and on that day, they will have no idea that God is using them to help you step into your destiny.  And, like King Saul, they will have absolutely no clue that your time has come!  The question is --will you be ready?  L.

Your Thoughts: Power!

“[I am] troubled on every side, yet not distressed; [I am] perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”      2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Be strong in whatever difficulties you are going through today.  Know that God loves you; and, that the issues you are going through will subside. Oftentimes, when we are going through deeply personal trials, we tend to be at our weakest —exposed, and exhausted.  Yet, it is precisely in our weakness that God teaches us how to persevere using His Strength, not ours. It is in our perseverance that we literally become our strongest. —So, just consider it a strength and endurance exercise to gain Power for your spirit.

In our weakness and sheer exhaustion, we learn how to relinquish our mind, body, and spirit to God; and, how to truly pray in earnest.  It is in those times that we actually learn what the Bible means when it says, "lean not" on your own understanding, but on your Faith in God.

Added below is another text which will strengthen your spirit. I changed the "we" to "I" and the "your" to "my;" to make the text more personal.  Try it now; it will strengthen your spirit! —Simply repeat it; and, keep repeating it until you actually feel God’s Power.

"[I am] troubled on every side, yet not distressed; [I am] perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”   2 Corinthians 4:8-9
"That Christ may dwell in [my heart] by Faith, that [I], being rooted and grounded in Love may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the Love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that [I] might be filled with all the Fullness of God.”     Ephesians 3:18

Breathe. Then, do it again.

When you are finished, know that God is strengthening you with His Power and His Love, giving you everything you need to be victorious!   L.

The Simple Things

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal; but, lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21

There is a quip concerning Bernard Madoff, the disgraced financier and ex-president of NASDAQ who scammed $50 billion from investors; the comedian said, "Why in the world would anyone trust someone with the name Made-Off!"Of course, it is humorous now that we think of it; however, I bet it's not funny to the thousands of people who were affected by his avarice.  Let's be honest, there is no way one man could get away with scamming 50 billion US dollars without help. Although he is not giving up the names of his co-conspirators, there had to be others.  It is impossible for one man to move that much money without the participation of others watching it happen.

Nonetheless, here's the interesting thing that happened. Some of the investors who truly believed in the prospect of making a profit on their investment, yet lost everything instead said, after the initial shock of losing their life savings, they are now appreciating the simpler things in life. The love of their families, their spouse, having a job, trees, ...the air they breathe. The prospect of taking life for granted and living for a retirement nest egg evaporated with their money. Most of us have heard people in similar circumstances say the same thing after losing all their belongings in a fire, theft, or natural disaster.

The issue is, the Bible speaks about this very thing in Matthew 6:19-21, “Lay up not for yourselves the treasures upon this earth….”   Take the time to really understand the verse.  It means you must take the time to enjoy the simpler things in life, tomorrow is not promised to you. Jesus said it best; Love God, and love your neighbor as yourself.  Your life, God’s love, your love for God, your heart's desire, those you love, those who love you, acts of kindness, compassion, and love for your fellowman, are simple things we make complicated.

Love and be loved in return.  —It really is just that simple.  L.

Yield Not to Temptation

"Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Ephesians 6:11-13

As a professed Christian, at some point you will have to be baptized.  And yet, when someone is baptized as a Christian, I tell them that their life, as they knew it, just got harder. Decisions will become more complicated, temptations will somehow feel larger-than-life, past friendships may become strained, and of course, let's not forget family life.  It does not matter whether the person is young, middle-aged, or as old as the hills, the determination to walk in faith will always be blindsided by some type of adversity.  Akin it to the story of Jesus on the mountain for 40 days and nights with every temptation, known and unknown to man, offered by the king of Sin.  All while The Enemy of our soul searched for a weakness or slight crack in the armor of Jesus.

In the case of Jesus, He had no known weaknesses except Love.  In our case, our weaknesses are known, every last one!  And, be certain, the king of Sin knows even our most secret weaknesses. They are not new; most of them have been woven throughout our family lineage for ages. Many of them, long-standing family strongholds and weaknesses that have been passed down for generations. But thankfully, we are not alone! Our only resource and recourse is to truly call for Divine help when we find our own armor has a slight flaw, crack, or gaping hole.  It is sort of like one of those 12-step programs designed to help former addicts where, you must call your mentor when you feel yourself slipping into any of those old dysfunctional habits. In our case, our Mentor is only a prayer away.

So, whether you are on your knees or standing up, with your eyes open or closed, under siege or riding high; don't forget to say a prayer calling on the name of Jesus to keep yourself from falling into the gaping hole that is temptation.  L.

Finding Solitude

"And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a Man with him until the breaking of the day. And when He saw that He prevailed not against him, He touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with Him. And He said; Let Me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me. And He said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And He said, thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed... And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”   Genesis 32:24-28, 30

We often rely on the company and companionship of others because, we are all social beings; and, it offers a sense of belonging to someone other than ourselves. In fact, there are not a lot of people who actually prefer being alone, at least not for long periods of time. Yet, solitude can bring a sense of reflection; and reflection can bring a sense of enlightenment; and enlightenment can bring a sense of purpose; and, a sense of purpose can lead to purposeful action, —the kind of action that ultimately leads to a definitive result.

In most instances, solitude will allow you to concentrate on those things God needs for you to learn, one lesson at a time. —Think of it as, God’s Independent Study Class.  Like any class, you will need to bring your past experiences and complete the prerequisites in order to attend. And, like any independent study class, you will need to do the in-depth research, introspection and final prep work on your own. In addition, only if you receive a passing grade will you advance to higher-level classes with greater challenges. However, in God’s Independent Study Class, just when you thought it was time for you to graduate, you find that new classes have been added to your curriculum.

Every person should have a time to reflect in solitude. A time set aside to commune alone with God, not simply for answers, but also for direction. There are personal revelations that will only occur when you are alone—insights into your personal life which will not occur when you are communing with others. These revelations are part of your personal growth and must be faced alone. Jacob learned this lesson when he took God’s Independent Study Class while planning to reconcile with his brother Esau. During his class, he grappled so long and hard with God for a passing grade that, God changed his name!

Why not take the time to enroll in God's Independent Study Class? Why not spend some time in solitude so that God can give you the direction that you need to complete His Life Class? Chances are, you will learn far more than you possibly ever imagined.

Your Thoughts: My Strength In Weakness

"I will love Thee, O Lord, my Strength.”
Psalm 18:1

Today’s verse is really very simple. As a Christian, one day you will look back on the worst days of your life, and realize that the only reason you survived without falling apart, is because, while you were wallowing in deep sadness, thinking that you would  never  recover, the strength of God’s Love revealed itself in your weakness.  His Strength compelled you to make yourself breakfast.  It helped you to get to work, it increased your productivity, and brought you through to the other side of your sadness unscathed.

Looking back, you now know that there is a process of self-discovery that no one can tell you about; it is the knowledge that God’s Love is real in your life.  It is not praise, and it is not worship; it is simply a place in time when you know, that you know, God has been The Supernatural Strength in your life the entire time. Yes. In good times and in bad times, He has been with You!  -You thought that you were all alone, seeing only one set of footprints marking all the places where your life has been. But now, looking back at all the times when you felt broken, just like the poem, Footprints in the Sand,  today, you know  that, God has been carrying YOU the entire time!  L.

Your Thoughts: Protected!

"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the Shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust. Surely He shall deliver Me from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover Me with his feathers, and under His wings shalt I trust: His truth shall be My shield and buckler. I shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence  that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.  A thousand shall fall at My side, and ten thousand at My right hand; but it shall not come nigh Me."       Psalm 91:1-7

Recently, a young pastor, speaking to a group of Chaplaincy students, told a story regarding his 5-year old son. As a Chaplain, Pastor, and former soldier, he and his wife decided that they would shield their young son from all the violence and violent images readily available to children, for as long as humanly possible. So, in an effort to do so, they continuously screen everything he watches.  Recently, while in a store making a purchase, he realized that there were movie previews playing in the background of the store. When he looked at his son, he noticed that his son had placed his head on the counter, shielding his eyes from the sudden onslaught of violence shown on the screen. He calmly said, “Son, what’s wrong?” His son, still shielding his eyes, quietly said, “Daddy, I’m scared.” Picking up his son and cradling him close to his chest; he said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Daddy is here. And, Daddy wouldn't let anything happen to you.”

As he told the story, I could “see” the entire incident as it unfolded in my head; and, I thought about God’s promise to shield His children when we are scared, under siege, broken, or fearful.  Today’s passage, taken from the beginning verses of Psalm 91, reminds us that God has given us the promise of His protection. It outlines His promise to protect us from snares, pestilence, dark terrors, or daily projectiles.  –And, He does not stop there!  He throws in His protection against those things that hide within the crevices of darkness; and, even those things or people that come for us in the fullness of day. He tells us that, thousands may fall from the peril around us, but it will not come near us.

Like our Heavenly Father, the father in our story protected his son from the onslaught of a perceived danger. He shielded him from the terror that was imagined in his son's young mind. –Now, consider your Heavenly Father as He shields you  against the “thing”  that has you scared, under siege, broken, or fearful.  Consider being under the shadow of His Wings, away from any of the things that have taken residence in your life, keeping you feeling trapped and afraid, with your head bowed and eyes shielded.
If you can understand just how much the father in this story wanted to keep his son protected, then consider just how much more your Heavenly Father will protect YOU!  L.

Peaceful Slumber

"In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat... for He grants sleep to those He loves."
Psalm 127:2 (NIV)

Are you sleeping well?  Did you have a good night sleep?
Did you know that having peaceful sleep is a Blessing? Peaceful sleep means that you have taken care of what you can; and, you have relinquished the daily issues and cares of this world to the only One who can dissolve your fears —God.  However, for those of you who are struggling with peaceful slumber, here’s a thought:

Turn off the television.
The television, with its loud commercials, bad news, and concurrent episodes of murder, mayhem, and the mundane, penetrate your psyche and change the natural cycle of your dreams.  Advertising executives originally developed television commercials to foster action, creating desire for their product, and the anxiety to purchase.
—None of which you will be doing in your sleep.

Turn off the music.
The music, even if it is your favorite song, actually does the same thing as the television commercials. However, they stimulate your senses a little differently.  Since the music is your favorite music, the songs trigger a more overt
emotional reaction by prompting memories to the surface, not allowing your brain to rest or relax. This is why the best commercials are set to music. They correlate a product to a favorite memory increasing the anxiety to purchase. Again, no need to count sheep. —Just turn it off.

Turn off the lights.
Turning off the lights tells your brain you are ready to sleep. It allows your body to wind down, limiting external stimuli to your eyes and skin. It is one of the reasons we get so tired during the winter months; we do not receive enough light stimulation from the sun. Days are shorter, we are tired earlier.
So, close the drapes, and flip the switch.

Say your prayers.
Saying your prayers at bedtime is not just for children; and, it is not, “Now I lay me down to sleep...”  Saying your prayers upon retiring signifies that you are relinquishing all your daily cares to God, acknowledging His blessings and sovereignty in your life. It is courageously accepting those things that you can change, and enduring those things you cannot.  Ask God's blessing for yourself, and those you love; ask for forgiveness for whatever you believe you have done against Him, yourself, and your fellow man. Then, close your eyes to the world and leave the rest to God. The Bible says, "...He offers sleep to those He loves."  So, to you, —Sweet dreams and peaceful slumber.  L.

Your Thoughts: "Lord, Open My Eyes"

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the Hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”   Psalm 121:1-2

This Psalm recounts a day in the life of the prophet Elisha taken from 2 Kings.  In the story, Elisha is being hunted by an enemy Syrian king, because of specific prophesies he gave the king of Israel to defeat Syria. When the Syrian king finally finds out exactly who is telling the king of Israel his military secrets, he commands his army to seize Elisha. So, during the night, the Syrian army completely surrounds the city and the prophet’s home.  The next morning when Elisha’s servant comes out to do his morning chores, he sees the army surrounding them; fearful, he goes back inside to tell Elisha. However, when Elisha comes out to look at the impending army, he turns to his servant and says, “Have no fear, The Army that is with us is larger than the one against us.”  Yet, Elisha’s servant could not see the army of God surrounding the Syrian army. He could only “see” the problem set before him.  Once Elisha prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened, the servant was able to see God’s angelic army of horses and chariots of fire surrounding the Syrian army.

What does all this have to do with you?  –Well, just because you can’t see God’s army surrounding you, does not mean it’s not there.  Even when things seem the bleakest, do not give up!  Because, the reality is, God can change the tide of opportunity in seconds!  He can even change an impending army of enemies to your advantage.
So, go ahead, “Lift up your eyes unto the Hills, your help comes from the Lord. Not just any lord, The LORD who made heaven and earth.”  L.

Your Thoughts: The Measure of Our Days

3/11/2020

Picture
"Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.”
Psalm 39:4

There was a friend of my family who was diagnosed with the “C” word; her doctors gave her only 6 months to 1 year to live. She prayed, asking God for the opportunity to see her young children finish High School.  Twenty-three years later, she not only lived long enough to see both of her children graduate, she lived to take two of her grandchildren to school.

But, there’s more. Twenty-three years later, the young physician who gave her the final valuation on her life, told her that she had only two weeks to live, at best; not knowing that she herself would not live to see those two weeks because of a freak accident.  Our friend had not only outlived her diagnoses, she also outlived several of her physicians.

Today’s verse reminds us that we are all terminal no matter how long we live. We measure our days because it keeps us on track to complete the things we need to complete in the time allotted to us.  But remember; only God determines our end. In Isaiah 38:4-5, Hezekiah asked God for more time, and God gave him 15 more years. He gave our friend 23 more years.

So, to the person who really needed this reminder today, God is still  in control! -Remember to pray and ask God for what you need; because, all things are possible with God, even more time!   L.
