The Repairer of The Broken

"And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.”

Isaiah 8:15

It is pretty easy to imagine something broken; broken things are everywhere. Some things break because they slip or fall; some things break from being mishandled or abused; while others break because they have an inherent flaw. Then there are things that break simply because of a separation. Others break from strain, disturbance, shock, or a fatal blow. The human mind, body, and spirit is no different. We can break for all the same reasons.

Recently, I viewed several artifacts that were created using an ancient Japanese method called Kintsugi. It is the skill of repairing broken pieces. Ordinarily, most restorers of broken things attempt to camouflage any new repairs, so that onlookers cannot see any evidence of the break. Yet, in Kintsugi, artisans mend broken pieces by inserting 14k gold powder to restore missing sections, often enhancing the value of the artifact. When the repair is complete, the broken item is not only more valuable than it was prior to its break, it is considered even more beautiful.

Looking at all the Kintsugi artifacts, reminded me of how most Believers come to God. We come searching for someone with the ability to fully restore our broken pieces; we come to Him, cracked, chipped, misused, abused, injured, wounded, fractured; or, completely broken, trying to find –The Ultimate Repairer of our breach.

As the Ultimate Kintsugi Master, God takes all our broken pieces; even the ones that cannot be found by anyone else, and with the solid gold bonding of His Love, Grace, Mercy, and Forgiveness; He mends our tears, covers our flaws, and repairs our broken fragments; so that, when others see us, they no longer see the cracks, chips, ruptures, or breaks; they can only see that we are much more beautiful than we were before.

Like a precious Kintsugi artifact, you will transform after your repair; you will take on a much more organic beauty.
–Beauty that embraces the many imperfections found when opening your heart and living real life. –A life, where you embrace a deeper understanding that, humanity is inherently broken; perfection belongs only to God.
So, I learned a new word to describe our Creator, –Kintsugi; The Repairer of the broken. L.

Proof In Adversity

“I have seen travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.”   Ecclesiastes 3:10

Meeting one of my neighbors in the elevator, a beautiful actress with a charming personality, we somehow began a conversation about perseverance. Although I hadn't seen her in a while, she was always gracious when we ran into each other. As we took the elevator together we began a short conversation about maintaining faith in the current economic climate. Given her profession, the motivation was being directed towards her rather than to me. And then, of course, the conversation turned to men.

I said, “When the economy is struggling it is much more difficult on men.  They have a harder time not linking their self-esteem to money and job security.  This makes it harder to date, and much more difficult to find the one who you may prefer to date.”  Then, she said something I truly considered profound.

She said, “It may actually be better to date a guy who is having an issue finding work; it tells you more about their character and their ability to survive under fire.  It tells you more about what kind of person they really are, than if they have a job where they are doing fine.”  As we left the elevator to go our separate ways, the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.  Not necessarily the dating part, but definitely the character and ability to survive under fire part.

Today’s verse says God allows travail or hardship so men can be exercised or tested while under duress. Duress causes all types of issues to arise. It offers a clear indication whether the person is strong, patient, kind, moral, and sincere; all while maintaining integrity and a passionate ability to persevere when the chips are down.  Or, it can prove that they are less experienced and can only function when everything in their life is going as planned. -This information is truly relevant.  Why?  Because the chips are going to be down eventually. At some point during our life experience, things will not go as we planned.  It is simply the nature of being alive.  A man’s reaction to adversity will tell you more about him than when life is flowing smoothly as planned.

I even had to reconsider the dating part; because, not having the financial resources to do extravagant things enables a couple to learn more about each other and not about what money can buy. It forces intimate conversations about dreams and plans, while adding candid discussions about financial issues.  Both sexes can learn a great deal about the other by not having the funds to do those things which can deter their focus from more serious issues. Struggling financially to make ends meet can definitely tell you a great deal about your potential mate and whether you want to commit or dismiss a future with him or her.

Duress can reveal those key personality traits we really need to discover about each other before making a permanent commitment. Traits such as, deeply rooted anger, frustration, resentment, or even violence.  It can unmask our true character, bringing it out into the open.   Just as Jesus told Peter he would deny Him three times, God has given us exercises in travail to shape the strength of our character. And, those same issues can reveal the character of a man or woman to determine whether he or she can become your life partner. Be wise in determining their true character in travail, it can mean the difference between having a lifelong lasting relationship, or having a lifelong lacking  relationship.  L.

Fulfilling Your Purpose

Picture
"Jesus said unto him, “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”      Matthew 22:37-40

Fulfilling our Purpose is a very specific phrase that causes us more anxiety than most other phrases.
Consider this; a tool that does not function is useless, no matter how beautiful it is. For example, a beautiful Mount Blanc pen, sleek as it may be, is useless if it cannot write. An impressive Henckel or Wusthof  knife is wonderful, unless it is dull and cannot cut. A gorgeous Patek Philippe precision timepiece, although quite expensive, is worthless in functionality if it does not tell time. The definition of a tool is, a specific device to aid an activity. What is the innate definition of a person—People—God’s Tool?  How about, specific entities to serve God and aid humanity? Ask yourself if you are serving God, and aiding humanity.  If you are not serving God or aiding humanity, —Well...

If you want to find out what would fulfill your purpose, ask yourself this question, "What would bring me ultimate joy?"  When you reach a conclusion, ask yourself another question, “Then what?”  Keep asking the “Then What?” question until you cannot answer it anymore and you will find out your purpose.

Many people believe money will fulfill their dreams; however, there are very wealthy people who commit suicide every year. There are others who believe having the love of a precise person will fulfill their dreams; only to find out that, they have entered a nightmare instead. And still, there are others who believe having the "bling" of cars, sprawling mansions, and luxury yachts, will fulfill the gaping hole that is a life away from God; only to find that they have become living curators of old relics.

So again, I ask the question, “What would bring you ultimate joy?”  Did you know that the “Then what?” question was asked to a host of people over the years, and what sociologists found out was that most people ultimately want internal peace and to help others.

Well..., this sounds a lot like serving God and aiding humanity to me.    L.

A Paradigm Shift

6/26/2020

Picture
"Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou know not.”    Jeremiah 33:3

The story of King Saul is such a terrific saga; it shows how he began his career as king of Israel, his faith, —or lack thereof, and how his reign ended. (1 Samuel 10:22-24, 31:1-6)  Although he really did not believe he was supposed to be the first king of Israel, once he actually became king, his arrogance would lead him to believe in his own strength. He was no different than the rest of us; he needed a paradigm shift to understand the leap of faith God desired for his life.

A paradigm shift is anything that allows you to move from one level of thinking to another. For some, it is the transition from college student to professional. For others, it will mean the transition from single-and-free to mated-with-children. However, most of us will experience a paradigm shift upon the passing of one or both of our parents when we finally understand the meaning of the circle-of-life. In that time and on that day, we truly become adults with an understanding that previously, we were the next generation to fulfill the gap, and now we are the generation in the gap.

Paradigm shifts are interesting events; they enable us to be in a particular circumstance while preparing ourselves to fulfill yet another role. In some cases, it becomes a type of projection into the future. In many instances becoming a Christian is akin to having a paradigm shift—your reality changes.

If you grew up in a Christian household, the shift is actually quite different than if you found God on your own.  (Don’t bother to write, I am a fourth generation Christian)  I say the paradigm shift is different because, “In-born” Christians can be a little arrogant in their belief; like Pharisees, sticklers for the law, believing that God only works for us based on the things we do. “New-born” Christians can see God more liberally than “In-born” Christians, because they can easily recall the depths from which God has saved them. They will be the ones who continuously remind us of the gamut of God’s Grace and Love in the lives of humanity.

It was the same when Jesus walked with the people; He caused a true paradigm shift among both the people and the Pharisees.  Each group had to change the way they looked at the extent of God’s Love.  For the Pharisees it was a new understanding that God Loved people more than “The Law.”  For the people, it was in understanding that God Loved them enough to forgive them for the sins they enacted against Him. So, whether you are an Inborn Christian or New-born Christian, you should rejoice in understanding that God will do all He can to keep you, constantly shifting His paradigm to keep you  in Grace!  L.

Your Thoughts: Your Rear Guard

"Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily; and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the Glory of the Lord shall be thy re-reward.”    Isaiah 58:8

To really understand today’s verse we must look at Isaiah 58:6-7, the two verses directly before verse 8.

"Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?"

In those two verses the Bible indicates that we should loose the chains of the oppressed, offering them freedom by teaching them about God. It infers that, when we make the decision to aid others in seeing the Glory of God, His Light will shine within us so brightly, others will “see” who He is through us.  And, more importantly, if somehow our health fails, we “shall recover speedily.”  God‘s Glory will be our “re-reward,” a term that literally means our rear guard.  So, what does this mean for you?

Just imagine for a moment, like God’s unseen army surrounding the prophet Elijah, God will empower His heavenly army to be your rear guard —literally covering your back when we make a point of telling others about Him. —Well, I don’t know about you, but that alone should make you want to run outside and tell your entire neighborhood about Jesus!  L.

**Now it is your turn to write your thoughts regarding today's verse in your journal. Don't forget to make it personal to you.

A First-Class Seat

Picture
“I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD.”   Psalm 27:13-14

I really love to fly; I love airplanes, the airport, and the concept of flying.  However, one day after an extremely exhausting experience at the airport, I decided that no matter what happens, I will never "fight" for a seat if the flight is overbooked, even in an emergency.  I figured if I am supposed to be on that flight, then it is for me; if not, then it is not for me.

Then one day, as I patiently waited on a very long line at the airport to board a flight from California to New York, I overheard the flight attendant announce to her associate that, "We've come to the last seat!"  -Since I was next in line, I was undisturbed.  As I was called by the attendant, out of nowhere, a woman jumps in front of me insisting that she was really next in line and that the seat should be hers; of course, it was a total fabrication. It was apparent that wherever she was, she had also overheard the flight attendant’s comment.  Just as the New York in me was about to rear its ugly head, I remembered my promise.  I let her go on and on about how the seat was supposed to be hers. Then I looked at the woman and the flight attendant and gently said, "Be my guest;" and, returned to my former place in line.  As I waited to be served I wondered why the flight attendant seemed a little stunned.

When I returned to the counter, she said to me smiling, “In all my years doing this job, I have never seen anyone do that! —Well,... we do have one more seat! -And, because you were so gracious to offer YOUR seat, I would like to upgrade you to First-Class!"  -Now, I was stunned!  It was the very first time I flew First-Class.

I compare this story to waiting on the Lord. It may appear that everyone is jumping in front of you, pushing by, getting further faster, ahead in everything —love, finances, —life.  But, do not pay them any attention, be patient; if not, you just might give away YOUR  First-Class seat to someone else.  L.

The "O" Factor

Picture
"If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.”         Job 36:11-12

It's true; I previously wrote, the hardest thing about being a Christian is forgiving those who have hurt you, especially those who have damaged you to your very core. The second has to be obeying God. In truth, obedience is first; because, if we obeyed, then forgiveness would be a non-issue.

Most Christians liken obedience to lightly obeying the Ten Commandments, and adhering to church dogma. However, in many instances, obedience comes down to God moving you in a direction you believe you are not prepared to go. He may ask you to speak to people you really don't want to interact with. He may ask you to do something you definitely never planned on doing. Or, you may be asked to go to the very last place on earth, you said, you would never be caught dead in.

We have many examples in the Bible of those who openly obeyed God, and those who did not. Moses in fear, asked God to send his brother Aaron to speak with Pharaoh instead, because he felt he was a terrible speaker. (Exodus 4:10-16)  On the other hand, a young David obeyed; showing no fear, he picked up his slingshot and stepped onto the battlefield to defeat a looming Goliath. (1 Samuel 17:32-54)  Both had their successes and failures along the way.

The thing to remember, is God's Will, will be done. Whether you decide to obey or not, His Will, will be accomplished. Why not eliminate your own fears and allow Him to work through you, instead of without you.  L.

Your Thoughts: Affirmation, "Planted By The River"

6/21/2020

Picture
"And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bring forth its fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he does shall prosper.”    Psalm 1:3

Consider writing out exactly what today's verse means to you. -Not simply a translation of the text; but, as God's personal promise to you.  For instance, for me it means that:

“When I remain resolute concerning God's promise of replenishment in my life, my endeavors will continue to blossom; and, whatever I plan, build, believe, or create within the will of God, will prosper. And, when I stand in faith, resolute on the Word of God, I will be like a tree planted by the water, continuously replenished, nourished, and blessed for overwhelming growth.”

I figure, if God can be massive, my hopes and dreams can be massive too!

Your affirmation can be more specific in regards to your family, career, talents, gifts, health, goals, and yes, even finances. Try making the text so personal to you that, when you feel as if you are failing, or overwhelmed by life, your personal verse will completely replenish you. For example, to see how powerful this verse is in its simplicity, insert your name in the original text below.  You will feel the difference immediately.  Say it out loud.

I, _____________ (insert your first name)  , shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bring forth fruit in my season. My goals, health, wealth, love, and forgiveness shall not wither and whatsoever I do shall prosper. -Amen.

Repeat it again.

This verse, taken from the very first song/Psalm of David, is an absolute prophetic affirmation in the life of Believers; why not embrace it and make it one of God’s wonderful promises to YOU!  L.

Your Thoughts: Truth

6/20/2020

Picture

"O send out Thy Light and Thy Truth; let them lead me…”     Psalm 43:3 a

In today’s world truth has become relative; Republicans say one thing, Democrats say another.  Major corporations spin their humanitarian deeds one way, small businesses another. The news agencies promote one level of information, while the Internet fosters another. Two people see the same incident; and yet, we receive two completely incongruent stories.  Many of us will determine who we believe is offering the truth about a particular subject, basing our determination of truth on how relative it is to what we believe. Yet, in all honesty, integrity has waned not only in our nation but, around the world. This is not something new; it has always been like this. In today’s culture, with an earthly population of more than seven billion people, it is simply more prevalent. It is a sign of the times.

We now live in a disposable society where even truth becomes disposable based on which side of the coin you are on and how vulnerable you are to the story. Yet, we must remember that, our guidance system is not this person or that person; but, the Biblical Word of God.

We are reminded of this in Mark 10:17-18, where a seeker says to Jesus, “Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?  To which Jesus responds, “Why call Me good, there is none good but One; that is God.”

Imagine, God walked with Adam and he did not tell the truth; He walked with Cain, same outcome plus murder. If you find a little 3 year old child and speak to them for about 10 minutes, chances are they are going to put an elaborate spin on the tale that they are telling you.  And, I dare say, even you and I placed under duress will conjure a good tale or two; it is the nature of being human.   When we listen to others, everything must be taken in context.
—Everything!

As Christians, we position ourselves from a position of loftiness. We attempt to work the biblical concepts that we study into our lives so that we can live our best life; however, we are only human.  —And, it is precisely our humanity that will always mislead us. There are so many forces working against us in reference to the truth, if you really want to know God’s Truth about any matter important to you, you must always ask for His Light and Truth to lead you. Why?  Because, everything else is camouflage.  L.

**Now it is your turn to write your thoughts regarding today’s verse.

Your Thoughts: "Do Christians Get Depressed?"

6/19/2020

Picture

"My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me,
Where is thy God?
Psalm 42:3

When we are going through our most difficult time, whatever it may be, we must remember to turn our eyes to God. Most Christians understand that turning our thoughts to God is our directive when the perils of life attempt to overtake our emotional health. These perils or vicissitudes of life leave behind remnants of deep sadness, depression, and anxiety. Yesterday, I listened as a pastor gave three very basic instructions for overcoming these remnants. Most of us know them; but, they can be so basic and mundane that we simply take them for granted.

First, have a talk with God.  As Christians, we call it prayer.  Not a ritualistic prayer, but a conversation with God to explain how you are really feeling inside and to specify what you need help with.  When we go to God in prayer, we accept His guidance, dominion, and power over our life. So speak to Him as Jesus did, as Abba—Father, or as a close friend. Remember, although God already knows how you are feeling; often, we come to Him in prayer so that we can truly begin the process of healing.

Second, speak with a godly friend; someone who can pray with you and give you Godly advice. Obviously, this is very important because, you really need someone who will pray for you when you are too weak to pray for yourself.
–So yes, this means that you will have to confide in someone else, telling them the truth about what is actually going on in your life; and, most of all, how it is honestly making you feel. This person will be a major factor on those occasions when you decide you will not listen to God, so make certain that they are trustworthy. Why? Because, God is relentless; and, if you are not listening directly to Him, He will speak to you again and again through this person until you listen; or, as Americans like to say, “Until you catch a clue!”

And third, READ your Bible. Begin to spend some quality time with the supernatural Word of God. It is powerful!
The Word of God speaks God’s Power into your life to restore your spirit’s equilibrium. It will plant seeds into the gaping holes that have been left in your spirit from all those perils and vicissitudes of life.
As you read, each one of those seeds planted by the Word will begin to germinate, little by little, until eventually they begin to bloom the Spirit of God back into your life.

Yes, like everyone else, Christians can be saddened and depressed by the circumstances of life; however, if we follow some very basic steps, God will lead us right back out of it!  L.

Praying For The Multitudes

6/18/2020

Picture

“Above all, taking the Shield of Faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the Helmet of Salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”
Ephesians 6:16-18

I know you pray for your family; however, please remember to pray for others in your workplace, your building, your block, your city, your state, the nation, and this world.

One New Year's Eve I made the mistake of praying only for my  family, friends, and the people in “my building” prior to going to sleep. I gave special relevance to my building because there was a New Year's Eve party occurring in the building's lobby. When I left for church the next morning, the building next door had sustained a major fire. The street was cordoned off and there were police patrol and news vehicles everywhere. Two people died, and four others were injured, including children who would later die from severe burns. All because one lovelorn guy decided that he could not live without his already married girlfriend; a woman whose husband had traveled miles with plans to reconcile and reclaim his wife on New Year’s Day. So, Mr. Lovelorn went to a nearby gas station, bought gasoline, and poured it throughout his girlfriend’s family's apartment as they slept, igniting both himself and their escape path. This incident became the first story of the New Year and was aired all over the nation. The next morning, all I could think about was, not that God had spared and protected "my building" from any damage; but that, if I had just taken a little extra time to pray for "my block" (there are only two buildings on my block),  maybe God would have spared the family and all the displaced residents in the building next door.

I know, it may seem a little far-fetched for some people to fully understand this; and yet, it depends on whether you really believe in the power of prayer to protect us or not. When the angels of God were sent to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, if you recall, Abraham negotiated with God to save both cities; if,  He could find ten righteous people—ten praying people.  And, because He could not find ten people, the two cities were destroyed.

So, today when you pray for your friends and family, feel free to run the gamut. Pray for the people on the bus with you this morning. Pray for the other commuters driving to work today. Pray for the vendor who sells your favorite morning beverage. and the one who you normally buy lunch from.  Don't leave anyone out! Pray for all those insignificant people that you never really pay any attention to; because today, it just might make the difference between life & death.  L.

Mentorship 101

Picture
"And knows His will, and approves the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness; an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. Thou therefore which teaches another, teaches thou not thyself?”         Romans 2:18-21

A formal mentorship is a type of training where both the student and the teacher have agreed to enter into a relationship of give and take. However, the truth is, every person is called to mentor and to be mentored throughout his or her life on a continuous basis.  At certain times, there will be those sent to you who can, and will, teach you to become a better person, parent, husband, employee, etc. And at other times you will be the person who will teach someone else to become a better person, worker, parent, husband, etc.

We need to be able to pass on the intimately truthful lessons we have learned throughout our lives to help others overcome the obstacles placed in their way. The more you value your lessons, the more you want to help others by sharing them. Obviously, this also means lessons relating to your walk with God; and, those biblical points you have learned to use to offset the pain of your most intimate trials and tribulations.

Your intimately personal testimonies may not be for everyone; however, you can trust that if you have learned from it, you will be able to teach from it. So today, why don't you  share your  testimony with someone.  L.

The Law of Receipt

"...And they said one to another, Behold, the dreamer cometh.”        Genesis 37:19

I attempted to console a friend and neighbor about the prospect of losing her garden-view apartment, by explaining what I like to call, The Law of Receipt. It goes like this; let's say your arms are full of your own personal stuff.
—You know; all the personal stuff you've held on to over the years that really only have meaning to you and no one else. To you, the things in your arms are priceless and their value is purely intrinsic. Every time you look at them, memories come alive in your thoughts and you truly believe they are irreplaceable and priceless. However, these things weigh you down and keep your hands full. You can no longer create new memories because there is no place left to hold or store another thing. Your bills are way overdue, but you cannot "sell" anything because, as you said, your things are priceless.

Now along comes that Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes guy with a $20 million check just for YOU!  —You know, that really big check that you must hold with both hands. However, your hands are full, holding on to stuff that you believe you can't let go of.  What will you do? --Tell him to put the check on the ground, you'll pick it up later?

—No! —That would be ridiculous!
You would drop that stuff, grab that check, and scream like a fire engine siren!

Having vision is the same. The old vision that brought you to the present must die, before the new one that will take you into the future can begin. God's blessings evolve to meet your needs. In order to receive the richness of God's blessing you must drop all the "crap!" --Oops, I mean your personal “stuff,” with all that intrinsic value and open your hands. If your hands are closed, how can you receive anything in the palms of your hands? If your hands are completely full, how can you accept anything new?

This is the simple law of receipt and it carries over into all aspects of your life. In order to receive the richness and continuous evolution of God’s blessings in your life, you must release the old to receive the new. —It really is, just that simple.  L.

"And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold to Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither; for God did send me before you to preserve life. So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God; and He hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.”        Genesis 45:4-5,8

The story of Joseph is quite powerful in addressing the humbling nature of accepting a position that may not have the status we are accustom to. As we go through the various recessions, many of us will lose our jobs and our income; forgetting that, we are really only one or two generations away from what is considered today to be the "deep blue-collar" work of a janitor. Yet, keep in mind that no country in the world would be able to run without the honest respectable work of those people who are willing to keep the surrounding areas clean for the rest of us.

While visiting Cancun, Mexico many years ago, I saw the familiar "Golden Arches," of McDonald’s near my hotel. Fascinated that there was actually a McDonald's in Mexico, I had to go in. To my surprise, there were only mature adults working behind the counter, and grayed-haired seniors keeping the restaurant clean. I commended the owner/ manager on the beauty and cleanliness of the restaurant, and told him how surprised I was to see "mature" adults working in the restaurant. Understanding my surprise, he explained that in Mexico, working at McDonald's or as a domestic in any of the area hotels was considered a "very good job, with employees quite proud when they are hired!" Most of his employees were college-educated, spoke fluent English, and were usually at the top of their class. That was more than twenty years ago; and, at the time, it was a complete paradigm shift for me. It left me  thoroughly fascinated that a job many Americans considered menial or for teenagers, was considered exceptional in another country.

There are times that God will work with our “status” idol to redevelop our sense of self, simply to reform our belief that, we are our job, income, company, or some other status idol that can disassociate us from simply being a child of God. No job should be beneath us if God has provided it.  -Simply because, like the biblical story of Joseph moving from the pit to the palace, you just never know where the job might lead you.  L.

Standing Alone!

" ...At that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.”        John 14:20

If living an obedience-based life were easy, everyone would be doing it. ...Consider this, Adam & Eve had everything they needed from God, and they couldn't do it.   ...I know it sounds bleak, but when I consider the things people do in an effort to stay in synch with pop culture, it sometimes makes me cringe.

You might remember the young man, a protester in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, who refused to move from the path of an oncoming army tank. The Chinese army had been called in to eradicate student protesters from their peaceful protest in the middle of the square. In an effort to make a stand for justice, this young man would not allow the tank to move forward. He became a hero and a worldwide figure for justice. He took a stand and would not move although all the other protesters ran for cover. If the tank moved to the right—he moved to the right. If it moved to the left—he moved to the left. He was prepared for the outcome no matter what the cost. Eventually the army general ordered the tank to mow him down. I still remember the incident, and can still see the moving image in my mind. This is the cost of faith. —This is the cost of an obedience-based life.

Eventually, you will be asked to surrender your will to anchor the Will of God in your heart. Sometimes the request will not be popular; and sometimes, you will have to stand alone. You will either run for cover and bow, or face the tank / cross as Jesus did. —Eventually someone will have to take a stand for the integrity of God, will that person be you?  L.

"...Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunts not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seek not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil; rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails; but whether there be prophesies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease, whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part;  But when that which is Perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.  When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face; now I know in part; but then shall I know even as I also am known. And now abide Faith, Hope, and Love, these three; but the greatest of these is Love.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-13

Without love, there is nothing … There is nothing, without love.

I am convinced that pure love conquers all, heals all, prevents all, and saves all.  It knows all, discerns all, creates all, perceives all, teaches all, finds all, reveals all, identifies all, and so on.  It is the remedy for everything, and without it, there is nothing and nothingness.  It is the reason we believe God is Love.  Nothing can exist without it.  No human, animal, vegetable, flora, fauna, or fish.  It is not only God’s love for us, or our love for Him; it is the encompassing and extension of our love to others.  As God’s Ultimate Gift, it is the greatest thing He imparted to us, and it continues to keep us in accord with Him, whether we believe or not.

As humanity, we cannot function without it. When we find it missing at the youngest stages of life, it manifests as wicked pathologies and dysfunctions that disable future adults from the basics of a common humanity most of us take for granted.  And, if it is still not discovered into adulthood, the mind finds ways of creating “love,” often, to the destruction of itself or others.

We search for it,—yearn for it, and eagerly find ways of capturing even the most minuscule traces of it in others.  We will give up our lives for it; and we will save the lives of others because of it. It heals our hearts and replenishes our souls.  What else could it be, but from God?  It is not physical love, but it can be.  It is not romantic love, but it can be. It is a thing so massive, both its depth and breadth is unimaginable. And yet, even the most minuscule unseen bit, once offered, can propel us to greatness.  Imagine.  ...It lives long after we have died and continues to work long after we have lived.  What else could it be, but of God.

In this new year why not move your life in the direction of finding out more about it?  Not to garner more of God’s Gift from others to yourself, but to offer more of it to others—for yourself.

Change to Love—you’ll change your life.
Change your life —You will change the world.  L.

The Human Genome

“For if you love them which love you, what thank have you? For sinners also love those that love them. And if you do good to them which do good to you, what thank have you? For sinners also do even the same. …But love your enemies and do good and lend, hoping for nothing in return and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest, for He is kind unto the unthankful and the evil.”                     Luke 6:32-33 & 35

The Human Genome Project is a relatively new science determined to unlock the “code to human life” as we know it. Not simply the double helix we have become familiar with, but a science much deeper and much more complex. With the emergence of 21st century computer technology, scientists gained the ability to reduce DNA sequencing down to a single molecule. More importantly, the genome project has cracked the genetic code giving scientists the ability to probe the unique code God ordained to create each person.  It is a fascinating technology which will offer each person the opportunity to understand his/her own personal blueprint of genetic strengths, weaknesses, or potential flaws.  And, while there are some people who will seek to create “designer babies,” most people will simply want to understand how to live the best life they can with the genetic cards they have been dealt. Currently, only the wealthy can afford to know their genomic past and some of the predetermined hazards of their potential genomic future. However, in the near future, the cost is scheduled to drop significantly.  Obviously, no one can determine, even after all that probing, planning, and knowledge, if you will fall prey to a freak accident or major disaster but, God. —So, heed any predictions carefully and prayerfully.

What’s even more interesting about this is, unlike fingerprints which uniquely separate us from everyone else in the world, our genome connects us to all other people in the world. From a historical standpoint, genetic scientists can also identify every living cousin, or our nearest living relatives around the world.  Even more fascinating, is that these scientists have already mapped the origin of humanity’s existence back to Africa; and, as shocking as it will be to some people, back to Africans, not apes.

By now, you must be wondering, “What does all of this have to do with Jesus?” Well, while thinking about the ancestral mapping of the human genome, and its ability to give us historical data relating to every ancestor we have ever had. —Not to mention, every common ancestor between us and every living human being on the earth today; consider this. With so much hate between entire nations, various races, opposing religions, countless ideals, and ideologies; ask yourself this question.  What will you do when you find out that your closest living relative, other than the ones you already know, is someone who, on the surface, seemingly does not look like you, yet is your ancestral genetic replica on the inside?

What will you do when you find out that your blood relatives are African, Caucasian, or Asian?  What about German or French, Armenian or Turkish, Serb or Croatian, Ethiopian or Eritrean? As for religions, we know that Muslims and Jews are genetic and biblical cousins; Jews and Christians are genetic and biblical brothers and sisters; all separated by interpretation and misinterpretations of the Old & New Testaments. —And, we haven’t even touched all of the subdivisions of various other religions created based on culture and tradition.

In Luke 6:32, Jesus said that loving someone who loves you is unremarkable; everyone does so, even the wicked. And repaying goodness with goodness, is also unremarkable, everyone does it, even those that are evil.

Our love of Jesus Christ separates us as His chosen nation, one that follows a very specific and ordained dogma.  We have sworn our allegiance to God, and to love our neighbors as ourselves, showing love not because our neighbor loved us first; but, because God said, “You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light!”

Yes, you have been set aside to show His marvelous Light to the world.  So, if you really want to do something absolutely remarkable, something so extraordinary that Jesus said it would prove that you are His true follower; offer goodness and Love toward those who you will receive nothing from in return—except maybe, wonderment and awe.   L.

Damaged!

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Ephesians 6:12

In an effort to love one another, we sometimes damage each other instead. So eventually, at some point, someone will  hurt you. Sometimes, it is unplanned but purposeful; and, sometimes it is completely accidental. Then there are times, when the pain is easily dismissed; and, there are other times when it is not, making forgiveness difficult. Whether or not we recover is the issue.

Sometimes we can almost see   directly into the heart of the other person and because of their  humility, forgiveness comes easily.  And then, there are times when our love for the other person supersedes the pain we feel, and again, forgiveness comes easily.

Yet, more prevalent are those times when fierce defiance compels us to plant our feet in the ground, requiring that we stand firmly in the cement of unforgiveness. I don't know about you, but for me, forgiveness is one of the most difficult aspects of being a Christian. Sometimes I believe I can forgive someone for the pain they have caused, yet, I find I cannot bring myself to even utter the simple phrase, "Good Morning."
My good friend Elliott Lamour once said to me:

“You have to really understand Ephesians 6:12.  When you understand this, you will understand that sometimes you will say something, and the other person will actually hear something completely different, causing complete confusion, bitterness, resentment, and war. The more you understand this, the easier it will be to forgive someone. Our struggle is not against people, it is against principalities.”

These words are true indeed. So, with this in mind, let’s make a conscious effort to work on forgiving each other, especially those people we believe have purposefully damaged us. But, I can tell you from experience; it is much easier said, than done.  -But, do it anyway.  L.

Accepting The Gift

"And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice; and be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you”
Ephesians 4:30-32

Forgiveness is a major issue for most people; and yet, it is detrimental to harbor resentment, unforgiveness, anger, hatred, and fear.  No matter how content we may appear on the outside, each one of those characteristics correlates to many of the things that ail our bodies and plague our lives.

Expanding on “A Gift to Yourself,” if you are trying to figure out how to begin the process of forgiving someone who has hurt you deeply, start by praying for yourself and that person. Praying for the other person is a vital component.  Ask God to forgive you for not being able to forgive that person; and, ask for His help in beginning the process. Ask Jesus to come into your heart, so that you can use His Strength and His Love in forging a path to forgiveness.  Ask Him to place a sense of forgiveness in your heart to disable any obstacles you may have in actually forgiving the person. This is not a lip-service exercise.  It is a meditation to begin the cleansing of your spirit and the opening of a more abundant life through the Spirit of God.   It is the act of forgiveness that cleanses both your spirit and that of the other person, whether they know it or not; and, whether they acknowledge it or not.

Start by placing a mental image of Jesus in the place of that person. The very act of placing Jesus in place of the person you want to forgive makes the process of forgiving clearer.  By placing Jesus in front of the person, instead of your love, with its defined limitations, you’ll see the very Spirit of Jesus Christ standing in their place. The resentment, anger, and fear will begin to subside as you begin to clearly see their weaknesses as well as your own. Compassion becomes fuller; forgiveness becomes stronger; love becomes easier.

The simple act of placing Jesus in place of the person(s) you need to forgive, helps you to forge a path to forgiving others, thereby, accelerating your healing process and spiritual development. Forgiveness is a gift from God to you; your acceptance of God’s forgiveness pays it forward to others, allowing His gift to keep giving in perpetuity.

Ultimately, the act of forgiveness from you is really not for anyone else, it is a gift from God to you; and from you back to God. L.

Your Thoughts: First Things First

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.”      Proverbs 3:5-6

Although the Bible tells us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts, it is not easy for us to forego our own intellect to fully trust in God.  After all, it was God who gave us the highest intellect of any life-form known on earth.  So, it is easy for us to use our intellect to mastermind solutions to our problems without reference, reverence, or submission to God.  It is only after we have exhausted every potential solution to our problems that we vaguely even consider God, instead of referring to Him first.

The thing to remember is, in going to God first we gain the best solution to propel our lives a quantum leap forward, bypassing all those weary obstacles that stand against us daily. –So next time, instead of waiting until all else fails, why not start with Him  first?  L.

**Now it is your turn to write your thoughts regarding today's verse in your journal.
